Ganga Dussehra is celebrated every year in Jayestha month in the Shukla Paksha on Dashmi (दशमी). This year falling on Sunday, 16th Jun 2024.
It is said that on this day Goddess Ganga came on earth after the penance by king Bhagirath (descendants of Sagara) which lasted for few thousands of years (as per God timeline), which was advised by his then Guru Triphala. Festival of Ganga Dussehra is celebrated in parts of North India; however, it is often celebrated in different ways depending on different states. It was on the day of Jayestha Shukla Paksha when river Ganga appeared on Ganga, anyone who reads the Shri Ganga Stotram (श्री गंगा स्तोत्रम) while taking a holy dip in the sacred river (Ganga) get rid of all the sins made in his/her life. The water of river Ganga is considered sacred and known to not just purify once soul, but it is also believed that the one who takes a holy dip in Ganga gets the ultimate moksha.
Ganga Dussehra is celebrated by thousands of devotees by taking a holy dip in the sacred waters of river Ganga, some of the key places for doing so is in the city of Allahabad, Garhmukteshwar, Rishikesh, Varanasi, Patna, Gangasagar, and Haridwar. A huge number of devotees gather on the banks on the Ganga river and do Ganga aarti while it is performed on Dasaswamedh Ghat in Varanasi and Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar.
We should also mention here that Haridwar(or Hardwar) which is an ancient city, it was exactly here that Ganga started her descend after Lord Shiva released her from her Jata (matted hair). Haridwar is also known to be the Gateway to God; the city can be seen as having the most intense spiritual aura.
One this day one who can't take a dip in the holy waters of Ganga River can also take a dip in any of the nearest rivers and should read the Shri Ganga Stotram (श्री गंगा स्तोत्रम). If you are donating anything in material form the number should be ten in quantities and also things which are used for doing puja should also be ten in numbers, doing so will increase in the effects of puja even more fruitful.
10 sins to free from after taking a holy dip in the holy water of the River Ganga
The one who takes the bath in the sacred water of Ganga is said to be free from 10 types of sins. As per Manusmriti (मनुस्मृति), Ten kinds of sins are mainly Kaayik (कायिक), Vaachik (वाचिक) and Maansik (मानसिक)
Kaayik keeping someone's belongings without his knowledge, violence restricted as per religious scriptures, Prostitution, etc.
Vaachik hate speech about someone, a false conversation about someone, cursing someone indirectly is four types of lexical sins.
Maansik trying to take someone else's holding, with unethical ways, imagining of hurting someone in mind and trying to make truth sound like a truth are three types of mental sins.
One should take a dip (bath) in holy Ganga or any nearby river or pond while meditating. While worshipping river Ganga one should read the following mantra
"ऊँ नम: शिवायै नारायण्यै दशहरायै गंगायै नम:"
"Om Namah: Shivaayai Narayanyai Dussehraayai Gangayai Namah"
After this mantra, one should offer at least five flowers (Pushp) and while offering flowers the following mantra
"ऊँ नमो भगवते ऎं ह्रीं श्रीं हिलि हिलि मिलि मिलि गंगे मां पावय पावय स्वाहा"
"Un Namo Bhagwate Hri Shree Hili Hili Mili Mili Gange Maa Pavay Pavay Swaha", should be chanted. Also, you should include the name of Bhagirathi while worshipping. All things should be of ten different varieties in the worship of Ganga Ji. There should be ten types of flowers, ten fragrances, Ten lamps, Ten kinds of naivedya, Ten betel leaves, Ten kinds of fruits. At least ten dips should be taken while doing puja.
